Prose vs. Poetry • Define- Non- rhyme • Poetry has a longer history Ex. Gilgamesh • Link to human’s oral tradition. • Not fiction per se.
Novel • Fiction • Represents characters and life with realism • Considerable length and complexity • Often sequential • Formerly Italian “Novella” or new idea (1375)
Romanticism vs. Classicism • Classicism Name given to the Greeks by Renaissance thinkers in the 14th century. Both Renaissance and Greek in general valued balance and order.
Romanticism • Not ‘love’ but all strong emotions • Valued imagination over reason • True beauty is expression rather than perfection • Grotesque can be beautiful • Eg. Jane Eyre’s love (romance) vs. Taliban in Shakespeare (pre romance)
Gothic • English author Horace Walpole, with his 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto. • A pleasing sort of Terror Motifs: • Mysterious. Madness • Darkness Decay Doubles. • Torture, Truth and Secrets • Hereditary Curses. Haunted Houses.
Genre: Evolution • Define: A grouping determined by shared characteristics. • Genre evolves • Ex. Elvis (late 50s) vs. Hendrix (late 60s) both are Rock but rock changes over less tan a decade.

Sub-Genre • Works of literature may cross over into different genres or may make more sense to you as a sub-genre. • Example: Mommas and Poppas (Folk) vs. Hendrix (Blues) • Same time but completely different sub genre of Rock

Horror • Horror is a current and so developing genre, and so it is less easy to look back and define objectively. • We must create our own set of motifs and characteristics. • This is what literary critics have been doing! We are a part of the process.
