  2. At the bell: • Write about a time where you have planned or plotted against someone.

  3. What do you know? Volunteer to read aloud: 999AFC2BZ4UQTIGYHTBT What is this? When you read ANY of Shakespeare’s 37 plays, he too had his own language. On the half sheet, name the 3 forms that made up Shakespeare’s language.

  4. Shakespeare’s Language It was written in one of three forms: prose, blank verse, rhymed verse He did this to acknowledge the groundlings & the high class audience members Objective: understand all 3 forms and using examples from random plays, pick out the type of form and in some cases state WHY.

  5. Prosecomedy, to express madness, scenes of everyday life Def: Ordinary speech. No rhyme, no rhythm. Ordinary paragraph.. Ex. Newspaper, text books, magazines, name a few more………… Example of Hamlet speaking in prose: What a piece of work is a man! 304   How noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, 305   in form and moving how express and admirable, 306   in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like 307   a god! The beauty of the world, the paragon of animals! 308   And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust? Man 309   delights not me—no, nor woman neither, though by 310   your smiling you seem to say so.

He got rid of his name and became a symbol. Same thing. Iamb=1 foot. How many feet are in this ex.?U /U / U /U / U / Pentameter: how many are a couple? Triple? Quad? Penta? So……. Rhymed Shakespeare liked rhymed couplets, i.e. two successive lines of verse of which the final words rhyme with another—usually the last two lines in a soliloquy ALWAYS the last two lines in any of the 154 sonnets From “The rogue soliloquy: More relative than this: the play's the thing Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king.

  9. Act III Sc. I • Scene begins with King, Queen, Polonius and Ophelia, and R and G. • Claudius asks R and G what they have found out about Hamlet. Is Hamlet Crazy—again, the ongoing question… • R and G say that they cannot find the cause of Hamlet’s craziness. R and G do say that Hamlet was very excited about the rehearsal for the play that is coming up…. How might Claudius respond to this?

  10. Sc. I cont’d. • Polonius and Claudius have an idea to “trap” Hamlet by using Ophelia as a “tool.” hoping to find the root of his madness. They instruct Ophelia to simply pretend she is reading a book. • Hamlet enters and delivers the most famous speech in literature…. “To Be or Not To Be..” After Hamlet delivers speech, he sees O. • How do you think Hamlet and O’s conversation went? To be or not to be… • Hamlet attempts to reason out whether the unknown beyond death is any easier to bear than life. • The underlying theme remains Hamlet's inaction and his frustration at his own weaknesses. Here, however, Hamlet seems less reflective about his failure to kill Claudius than perhaps his failure to take his own life. This is also a speech that explores the idea of consequence. • Actor’s Choice who is playing Hamlet. HOW MIGHT AN ACTOR ACT THIS FAMOUS SOLILOQUY? IF THE ACTOR CHOOSES THAT HAMLET IS REALLY INSANE, COULD THE SOLILOQUY BE PLAYED DIFFERENTLY?

  12. Act III sc 2 • What has happened up until this point in SC. I? • 2nd time Shakespeare uses a play within a play. THIS IS THE PLAY WITHIN A PLAY THAT RETELLS THE STORY OF THE BROTHER KILLING THE KING!! NOT THE MURDER OF GONZAGO! • Hamlet asks Horatio, his friend, to watch the king’s (Claudius) reaction to the play they are about to perform. At this time, it is safe to say that Horatio knows what the ghost has told Hamlet. Horatio listens and sits himself in a good spot to watch the king’s reaction to the play.

  13. 2nd play within a play… • The play begins with a “dumb show,” which is a pantomime of the drama to come. • On stage, the basic form of the alleged murder is repeated: WHAT DO YOU THINK THE PLAY IS ABOUT? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtYCXO-jAJg • Reactions? • How does Claudius react to the second play within a play after its over? • Hamlet is told that his mother would like to see him in her chamber. How does Hamlet respond to this request?

  14. Act III Scene 3 • Claudius gives R and G a sealed envelope with orders for Hamlet to return to England. Why? • Polonius enters and once again asks Hamlet to follow him to his mothers chamber where she is waiting for him. What does Polonius do? • Alone, the king kneels and prays in guilt, but reflects that this penance with not be genuine because he will still have his crown and his wife. • As Claudius is praying, Hamlet comes up from behind him… Why doesn’t Hamlet kill Claudius right then and there?

  15. Act III Sc 4 • Portrait of Gertrude • Reactions?

Act III Sc 4 Ct’d… • In the chamber, awaiting Hamlet’s arrival, Polonius hides himself behind one of Gertrude's curtains. • How does Gertrude act towards Hamlet? • How does Hamlet react to Gertrude? • Hamlet pulls his mother in front of a mirror, saying that he will reveal her inmost part. • How does G respond to this? • Polonius cries for help- thinking that the hidden voice is Claudius, what does Hamlet do?

  17. Ct’d… • Forgetting the “rash, intruding fool,” Hamlet sits his mothers down and places two portraits in front of her. One of Claudius and the other of his father. • How does Hamlet describe the two brothers in he portraits? How does G respond to this? • Old Hamlet’s ghost reappears and tells Hamlet to stop berating his mother and continue on with his duty. • Hamlet then comforts his mother. How does G react to this? HAMLET MUST BE CRAZY? WHY?

  18. CT’D… • Hamlet tells his mother that he is in fact insane. He reiterates that she should repent her marriage to Claudius. • Hamlet tells his mother that he is ordered to return to England with his “friends” R and G. But, WILL HAMLET TRUST THEM? WHY OR WHY NOT? • The act ends with Hamlet dragging the dead body of Polonius off stage.
