Engineering and Design What has been done since the las collaboration meeting and what still needs to be done?
January 2008 Yes, It is already January!
JLAB Engineering Manpower • 2.5 Mechanical Engineers – W. Crahen, (Solenoid) G. Biallas (50%) T. Whitlatch • 3.5 Mechanical Designers – C. Hutton, J. Lagner (contract) V. Razmyslovich TBD (for solenoid 50%) • Possibly additional contract designers to help with drawing crunch in late spring
Who is doing the Engineering Design? • Solenoid – JLAB – G. Biallas/TBD • Target – JLAB – M. Seely / TBD • Start Counter –FIU/JLAB W. Boeglin/TBD • CDC – CMU/JLAB – C. Meyer/V. Razmyslovich • BCAL – Regina/JLAB – Z. Papandreou/G. Lolos/T. Whitlatch/J. Lagner • FDC – JLAB – D. Carman/S. Taylor/B. Kross/B. Crahen/C. Hutton
Who is doing the Engineering Design? • TOF – Indiana U/JLAB – M. Shepherd/B. Zihlmann/TBD • FCAL - Indiana U/JLAB – M. Shepherd/B. Zihlmann/TBD • Tagger – CUA/Glasgow/JLAB/TBD – F. Klein/G. Yang/C. Hutton/TBD • Hodoscope – CUA/UConn – F. Klein/R. Jones
Who is doing the Engineering Design? • Collimator – UConn/CUA/JLAB – R. Jones/F. Klein/TBD • Pair Spectrometer – UConn/TBD – R. Jones • Radiator – Glasgow/JLAB – G. Yang/TBD • Infrastructure – JLAB – T. Whitlatch/C. Hutton
What has been done since Oct. Collaboration meeting? • BCAL assy progress • ¼ scale model fabrication underway (FSU) • Assy procedure progressing • FCAL testing • Small array fab and heat test (Indiana) • FDC progress • Cooling system defined • Progress on support system • Tagger Interface defined
What still needs to be done by this summer? • 100% Design BCAL,FCAL,CDC, FDC • 90% Solenoid, diamond radiator • 80% UPV, TOF, Hodoscope • 70% Beamline, Tagger, Platforms • 40% Start Counter, Target
FCAL Matters to be Resolved • What Lead/Glass blocks to be used near center (Rad Hard)? • What cell Wall configuration will be used? • Is cooling required for PMT electronics? • Will curing of lead/glass be required? • What will be the calibration system? • Magnetic Shielding
BCAL Matters to be Resolved • Fiber Specification • Lead Sheet Specification • PM configuration (SiPm, Burle, Planacon) • Heat Loads from SiPm’s • Installation procedure continue
CDC Matters to be resolved • Final straw tube configuration • Electronics heat load • Electronics configuration and feedthru • Gas mixture and flow paths • Correct 3D model for new length/config • Support rail design
FDC Matters to be resolved • Final Package configuration • Support rail design
TOF Matters to be Resolved • Final configuration • Light collection • Magnetic shielding
Target Matters to resolve • Specification • Position • Cooling of liquid H • Options for solid, nuclear, He?
Tagger Matters to Resolve • Contract for 100% design –Jan 31st bids due • Hodoscope Design
BeamLine Matters • Radiator/Goniometer – diamond fabrication, how to support diamond • Collimator/shielding – more definition • Pair spectromenter – who is to define specifications and do design?
Solenoid Matters to be Resolved • Cryogenics design • Coil shield leaks • Shorts (coil 1)
Infrastructure Matters • Final Rack Configuration • Final Cable runs • Final Design of platforms
Other matters • Magnetic field calcs updated • Calorimeter Transition Region? • DIRC?
ALIGNMENT CONSIDERATIONS • Network of Fiducials around the Hall Tie into the Main Accelerator (within mms). • Each Component will have own Fiducials that are visible on Installation (30 -100 micron accuracy) • Optical Tracker to be used throughout to determine component position better than 100 microns relative to Hall network.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL • Most Heat Produced by ASICs (<2KW) • ASICs Cooled by Water (FDC), and by Dry Air (CDC) • Dry Air Pumped into Center of FDC to keep Humidity down. (Hall B monitored to 40-45%) • Dry air pumped onto ends of BCAL for cooling of SiPM’s? TBD
How do we get there from here? • Assume Final Design Specs March 1 for FCAL, BCAL, FDC and CDC • Assume Final Design Specs May 1 for remainder of systems • Continue Weekly phone meetings on details for each detector • Use Action Item Tracker • Hard work! • Communication!!!!!!

What is a Final Design Review? • Verification that the design meets requirements • Analysis performed to validate design • Verify manufacturing and installation is achievable • Verify procurement issues resolved • Verify drawings, specifications and procedures are complete (to applicable level) • Verify test plans have been established • Ensure recommendations incorporated from previous reviews.
What is 100% Design (minimum) • Documentation good enough to ensure the proper procurements are being placed. • This means signed drawings, specifications and fabrication procedures
