Purpose A volunteer program to provide health care to the under served in remote rural villages (campo/batey) and an opportunity for immersion and spiritual growth. • Students (volunteers) • medical, dental, pharmacy & nursing • undergraduate • Professionals (volunteers) • Dominican staff

ILAC – A Mission with Objectives • To improve the health and quality of life of the Dominican impoverished population • To educate and promote integral health through the prevention of diseases and practical solutions of sanitation and health maintenance • As a Christian organization, in the Jesuit tradition, ILAC promotes a faith that does justice, guiding its participants toward greater freedom and commitment to service. • As a Christian organization, ILAC helps to build communities based on the ideals of service and love • ILAC strives to promote integral well-being and spiritual growth to all its participants and those it serves • Through the integration of study, reflection, and experience, the students develop a heightened awareness of the ethical and moral issues that confront them within a third world context and come to appreciate how individuals from another culture experience reality
ILAC - Summer Program in the Dominican Republic • Some Spanish is required • Either Spanish 211 or equivalent • Or OTD 330 Spanish for Health Professionals • A non-credit Spanish course is offered for those accepted to participate in the ILAC Summer Program Spring semester – seven 2 hour classes offered, dates are on the Application form. Spirituality, Culture and History, and Personal Testimonies from men and women who experienced ILAC a number of years. • A survival Spanish course is required in the Dominican Republic • Participants are encouraged to take a Spanish course in the spring before the summer program if they have never had Spanish.
ILAC Summer Program in the Dominican Republic • The immersion begins with a series of preparation meetings and a Retreat at Creighton University in the spring • Students are divided into teams with other undergraduate, dental, medical, nursing and pharmacy students, and doctors, dentists and registered nurses and pharmacists.
ILAC Summer Program in the Dominican Republic • Five week period divided into different segments • Orientation (1 wk) • Travel to remote rural villages (4 wk) • First Clinic Session (2wk) • Second Clinic Session (2wk)
ILAC Summer Program in the Dominican Republic • Orientation process at the ILAC Center in Santiago • Study Spanish • Team building • Prayer, worship, and reflection • Study the Dominican culture and history
ILAC Summer Program in the Dominican Republic • Travel to remote rural villages for two weeks • Each participant lives with a Dominican family • Participants spend time with their Dominican families and adopted communities • Participants contribute to the community with community chosen “Charlas” (Nutrition, Exercise, Preventative Health, Disease states, Medications) and other activities • Participants reflect on their experiences through prayer, worship, journaling, and reflection.
ILAC Summer Program in the Dominican Republic • Travel to remote rural villages - First Clinic Session • Pharmacy students set up their pharmacy • Teams offer health care and education in clinics half-days Monday – Saturday (multidisciplinary approach) • Participants spend time with their Dominican families and adopted communities after clinics • Participants reflect on their experiences through prayer, worship, journaling, and reflection.
