New for 5th Grade • Binder Organization: Students have three binders • Math, Language Arts and a combined Science and Social Studies binder. • There will be binder quizzes to check organization. • Personal Dictionary: Develop skills that help students learn new words on their own--at their independent reading level. Due Fridays • Encourage at-home discussions about words. (Word of the Week) • Word of the Day : included in the Personal Dictionary • Daily Paragraph Editing: (D.P.E.) Punctuation and grammar will be taught and then reinforced in written work for all subjects. • Analogies • Quizzes: There will be quizzes for the Word of the Day, D.P.E. and analogies.
What’s Similar to 4th • Homework Board: Student Planner • Making Meaning: Reading Instruction • Independent Reading: Our goal is to foster an environment where students find reading enjoyable and easy to do. • Students keep track of their reading in the Reading Log. Due Mondays. • The goal is 125 minutes per week (about 25 minutes per night). 125 minutes is Satisfactory 200 minutes is Outstanding Word Study: Spelling new words and learning spelling patterns. • Word Study Packets: Practice how to spell the words and use them correctly in short writing assignments.
More Reading! • Reader’s Notebook: An ongoing written conversation with the teacher about independent reading. • I hope to get blogging started as well! • Class Reading: (Novel Study/Literature Circle Discussion Groups.) Students will practice, and then show mastery of reading skills and reading strategies taught in Making Meaning. • Skills: Making inferences, synthesizing information, determining word meaning using the context.
Even More Reading! • Book Buddies (Build reading fluency, self esteem and a caring school community.) We are teamed with Mrs. Rodaman and Mrs. Iannacone’s second grade class. • NJASK Preparation
Writing • Writing Workshop: Students develop writing based on own topics and interest. • Emphasis is on the writing process—prewriting, rough draft, revision, editing, publishing. • Writing Prompts: NJASK 5 preparation • Informational: Across all subjects to build all-around literacy.
Homework • HW 45-60 minutes per night is the goal. • Math: 15 minutes (Estimate) • Students almost always have Math homework. • Reading: 25 Minutes (Average) • Daily Paragraph Editing (5 minutes) * • Personal Dictionary (5 minutes) * • Cursive* • Journal Writing* • * Might be done in school
