  1. CAD - Year 2GEARS

  2. Power Transmission • The following methods may be used to transmit motion / power. • Gears • Belts • Chains

  3. Gears • Gears are standard engineering components used to transmit rotary motion (power) from one component to another. • They tend to be used: • where space is limited • where precise transmission ratios are required • where torque levels are high. • ideal were there is a change in axis direction or rotation..

  4. Types of Gears A number of configurations exist depending on the relative motions required. These include. • Spur gears (between parallel shafts) • Helical gears (gives smoother transmission between parallel shafts)

  5. Types of Gears • Bevel gears (where shafts are at an 90 degrees to other and in line) • Worm and wheel (Shaft at 90 degrees to each other but out of line). • Rack and pinion (converts rotary to linear motion).

  6. Involute Generation

  7. Involute Gear Terminology

  8. Involute Gears in Mesh

  9. LINE OF ACTION

  10. Gear Terms & Formulas

  11. Module Module, m (mm) Gear-tooth size as a function of the module Preferred module values Preferred gear teeth number values

  12. Gear trains are used : • To implement a speed change • To change the direction of rotation • To create a mechanical advantage, increase torque.
