Ultrasound for Preventative and Predictive maintenance Gary Rees UE Systems Europe
Objective Introduce Ultrasound technology and demonstrate how you can save energy, time & money!
Agenda UE Systems Who we are and what we do Ultrasound technology & applications How & where the technology works Ultrasound at YOUR PLANT How Ultrasound can be implemented
Who are we and what do we do • Founded in 1973 in Elmsford New York, USA • 43+ years experience with ULTRASOUND • We are a global company: • Europe UE Systems Europe, based in the Netherlands • North America 11 regional offices in USA, Canada & Mexico • South America Regional support managers Spanish • Asia UE Systems Asia, based in Hong Kong • + over 200 local distribution partners worldwide!
How & where the technology works Medical applications Tickness gauge Flaw detection in solids PULSE ECHO Cleaning Welding and cutting ULTRASOUND DIVISIONS POWER AIRBORNE AIR & STRUCTURE BORNE STRUCTURE BORNE
How & where the technology works What we need to produce Ultrasound
How & where the technology works Electrical inspection Leak detection Valve inspection Mechanical inspection Custom solution
How & where the technology works • Leaks: Why leak detection? • -> Economics: leaks cost money • -> Environment: CO2 reduction & special gasses • -> Safety: Flammable gasses • Our digital Ultraprobes can report the cost per leak! • 1 - find it • 2 - tag & record • 3 - report!
How & where the technology works Valves: Inspection using our A-B-C-D method Listening and recording dB levels at 4 test points will give accurate information if the valve is leaking A leak in flow direction after the valve will create turbulence, fluids or gasses B D A C D=42 dB A=33 dB B=48 dB C=59 dB
How & where the technology works Steam traps: Very expensive to build and operate! Check steam traps regularly to cut energy cost & optimize efficiency Testing steam traps while in operation: • Test for correct operation (modulating valves) • Test for leakage when in closed condition • Determine location of sound emission (confirming diagnoses) • Report the steam loss into yearly cost reporting
How & where the technology works For evaluating steam traps we need: Ultrasound & temperature + Analyze the condition and report the yearly losses with our Data management software (DMS) & Spectralyser software + GOOD BAD
Infrared Start Failure Oil analysis Structure Borne Ultrasound Vibration Audible noise P P2 P1 Contact heat P3 P4 P5 Predictive Domain Proactive Domain P6 Fault Domain F How & where the technology works Mechanical inspection: CBM of bearings & lubrication optimization EARLY WARNING OF BEARING FAILURE LUBRICATION DOMAIN OPTIMIZING BEARING LIFE! (DMS & GREASE CADDY) Max time for planning
How & where the technology works • Using ultrasound technology for trending bearing condition: • -> Indicating early warning of failure • -> Identifying lubrication condition • -> Avoiding over lubrication • Friction between mechanical components will cause a sound energy • The dB levels can be used to evaluate condition and set alarm levels at each condition with the help of DMS software: • Baseline+8dB = Lubrication alarm • Baseline+12dB = Microscopic damage • Baseline+16dB = Visual damage 88 dB 70 dB Example: GOOD BAD
How & where the technology works Condition based lubrication -> avoiding over lubrication! The right amount of grease based on the condition at that moment 1- Getting your lubrication report from DMS, go out and perform lubrication 2- The Grease Caddy 401 will tell you things regarding lubrication: • When to stop lubricating. • How many strokes used. • Cost of the lubrication process
How & where the technology works InfraRed = RESISTANCEproblems Ultrasound = DISCHARGEand MECHANICAL problems This applies for any type of equipment and can be detected from a distance! Inspect switchgears at the air gaps before opening doors IMPROVING SAFETY STANDARDS FOR THE INSPECTOR: 1- Ultrasound from a distance 2- Open doors and 2nd scan 3- IR on resistance problems Find more and be safe! Electrical discharge: Will cause the air to vibrate and create a sound
How & where the technology works • The Ultraprobe will find early stages of: • Corona • Tracking • Arcing • Mechanical looseness • Up to 30 meters with help of the Ultrasonic Waveform Concentrator
Ultrasound at your plant Introduction training On site, ½ a day introductory training Type specific training 2 ½ day training to implement a workable program at you plant Level 1 training CertifiedIn-depth training on the technology and instruments
Benefits • -> Easy to use and quick to learn! • -> 1 instrument for many applications • -> Training and support available to you at all times • -> Regular updates on enhancing software reporting • -> DMS & Spectralyser software update & license free! • -> 5 year factory warranty • The Ultraprobe series will produce results and be highly cost effective for you! Ultraprobe 15,000 WWW.UESYSTEMS.CO.UK Ultraprobe 10,000 Grease Caddy 401 Ultraprobe 9000 Ultraprobe 3000
