Inova Health System offers Sign Language Services and Video Relay Interpreting (VRI) to support effective communication for patients who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Our team of skilled interpreters is available 24/7 to provide in-person or VRI services, ensuring patient-centered care in emergency situations. While VRI may have limitations, we are continually exploring innovative solutions to enhance language access for all patients.

Wedemonstrate thisinourinterpreterservicesby asking eachandeverypatientandtheircompanionifthey communicateinEnglishor/ifthey use another languagetocommunicate.IftheydesireaSignLanguageInterpreterwelettheindividualmakethe decisioniftheywanttouse an inpersoninterpreter,or VRI.

  9. EmergentSituations: • Intheeventthatapatientis comes into oneofour Hospitalsunderemergent circumstances weoffer our VRIas an optionuntilthein-personinterpreter arrives.InthisaspectVRIservices are very prompt andeffective. • VRIis not suitableforcertain circumstances.

Inova’sInnovation: • Inovacurrently has astaffof22PRNAmericanSign LanguageInterpreters,andonefulltimeASLInterpreter. • Inova has aSign LanguageScheduleron duty 24/7(forstaffatanyofour locationstorequestan interpreter). • Weare currently exploringusingVRIinhouse(weare testing thiswithspokenlanguagesas wellasAmericanSignLanguage).

  11. VRIObstacles: • Wehavesimilarconcernsas mostwithVRI,suchas: • unusableforthosewithvisual impairmentsorany numberof • complexsituations(immobilized,fatigued,distressed,etc.), • twodimensional, • connectivityorinternetconcern(naturaloccurrencesor • disasterscancauseproblems).

Suggestionsfor VRI MedicalInterpreters& • ExtensiveIn-personmedicalinterpretingbackground • Continualeducationinthemostcurrentmedical • terminology,andcurrentpracticesandprocedures • Selfawareness-VRIinaEmergencyDepartmenthasthepossibilityofbeingveryintense(imaginebeinga911 operatorwithaviewintothecallersentireworld) • Medicalinterpretingisnotforeveryone. • BeinginaVRIenvironmentwhereyoumaygetcutoffduetoanynumberofreasons(ITproblems,Inpersoninterpreter arrives,patientisrushedtoanynumberoflifesaving measures) • canbeverystressful,sobeingemotionallypreparedforthese • complexsituationsiskey.
