So Many, So Few - A Model for Providing & Supporting Distributed Services. This workshop will give an overview of how IMSU successfully implements and supports services for 2500+ users, in 35+ units over more than 6 hospital sites spread across the city. Discussion will cover the rationale behind the use of various technologies, including Novell Netware as being key to ease of management of user accounts.

Background • 1980’s to early 1990’s - Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine Data Centre • Provided services primarily to NDM: Mini, RS6000/AIX • Involved with initial networking of JR to replace Gandalf connections • 1991? – Units collaborate at RI to install ethernet • 1995 IMSU established and Director appointed – Data Centre absorbed by IMSU • to date • gradual increase and transfer of staff to IMSU • collaboration with IT staff in other units • introduction of new services • With Divisionalisation came IMS & IMSU
