  2. Hot Weather Risks Dehydration Fluids lost exceeds the amt. of fluids taken in. Heat cramps Involuntary muscle spasms Heat exhaustion Incr. in sweating, body temp, and cool wet skin Heat stroke Inability to sweat, hot and dry skin, and fast breathing Cold Weather Risks Frostbite When body parts, especially fingers, toes, and nose, become frozen Hypothermia Inner body temp. becomes dangerously low Environmental Hazards

  3. Environmental Precautions • Hot Weather • Loose fitting, light colored clothes • Cotton rather than nylon • HYDRATE! • Cold Weather • Several layers, loose fitting • Head should be covered • Oil-based ointment to lips, cheeks, and nose

Safety Equipment • Helmets- Reduce injuries to brain and skull • Football, biking, baseball/softball, skateboarding, horseback riding, skating, lacrosse, wrestling, boxing • Wrist guards, knee/ elbow pads- Absorbs shock from falls. Can also prevent scrapes • Skating, skateboarding, biking, hockey, basketball, volleyball • Mouth guards- Protects mouth, teeth, tongue, and cheeks. • Football, hockey, rugby, basketball, boxing, wrestling • Goggles/ face protector- Protects eye and eye socket • Lacrosse, handball, hockey

  5. Other Precautions • Proper footwear • Based on your sport to lessen injury • Sun protection • SPF, hat, eyewear • Pollutants/ Air quality • Best time of day to work out

  6. Other Tips • Have a physical exam before starting a sport. • Never engage in sports without proper instruction. • Be in shape before the first day of practice. • Begin training slowly. • Always warm up and cool down. • Drink water before, during, and after practice. • Get plenty of rest. • Eat will to fuel body and prevent injuries. • Don’t participate when injured or sick.
