Jacques Cartier • Europeans had been coming to North America for hundreds of years before New France was founded. • Explorers such as Jacques Cartier came from Europe (Jacques came from France) to find a seaway linking the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. This would create a shorter trade route from Europe to the Far East. • Jacques Cartier claimed the territory around the St. Lawrence River—in what is now Quebec—for France in 1534.
How Donnacona (and other first nations people) helped Jacques Cartier • They provided information about the area. • They showed the French how to treat and avoid scurvy (a terrible disease). • Some of them accompanied Cartier to France so the king could see who lived there.

Samuel de Champlain • Hundreds of fishing ships from Europe (Samuel came from France) sailed to North America. • The men aboard fished for cod in the waters off Newfoundland each summer. • Fishermen only came ashore for fresh water and for firewood. There they met the First Nations people. • Samuel colonized (helped establish the settlements)the territory that came to be called New France, the area now known as Quebec.

Canada’s First People First Nations: Pre-Contact • First Nations peoples lived all across North America. • Most First Nations hunted, trapped, and gathered food for survival, some also grew crops such as squash, beans, corn, and tobacco. • They believed that the natural world belonged to everyone. • First Nations also traded with each other. Each nation had its own spiritual beliefs, but most believed in a Creator of all things.
Your Task • After listening to text about the First Nations people and seeing video clips related to the explorers. You can begin to piece together the story of New France. • Take some time now to jot your thoughts down. What did each piece of information you were exposed to talk about, what occurred? • *Think back to our initial discussion question*
