Foiling Overview on multiplying binomials by foiling
First Look at the problem • (2+3) (4-2) • Remember the rules for multiplying negatives. • Multiplying a positive and negative = negative • Multiplying a negative and negative= positive • Multiplying a positive and positive = positive
Foiling • F: First = multiply the two beginning numbers in each parenthesis with each other. • O: Outer = multiply the first number in the first set of parenthesis with the last number in the last set. The outer numbers. • I: Inner = Multiply the second number in the first set on parenthesis with the first number in the second set. The inner numbers. • L: Last = Multiply the last numbers in both sets of parenthesis with each other.
F: First • (2+3) (4-2) • Multiply the first 2 numbers so 2x4=8.
O: Outer • (2+3) (4-2) • Multiply the two outer numbers • 2x-2=-4 • So far we have 8-4
I: inner • (2+3) (4-2) • Multiply the two inner numbers 3x4=12 • Since this is a positive 12, we put it in as a +12. • So far we have 8-4+12
L: Last • (2+3) (4-2) • Multiply the two last numbers together 3x-2=-6 • So to finish our answer it would be: 8-4+12-6 • Then answer straight across and you should get: 10
