  1. Title: Photosynthesis 08/29/11 Do Now: How does the sun…? 08/29/11 OQC Standard 1d: Students know that chloroplasts capture sunlight energy for photosynthesis. Answer: Every organism needs energy because its cells need to do work to keep it alive. The sun indirectly provided me with energy today when I ate an apple. The apple came from a tree that made its energy from the sun. Then I ate its energy when I ate the apple. I want to know why can’t I do photosynthesis like plants? • Please silently read pg 118 • Please read Figure 1 at the top of pg 119 “Energy from the sun” • Write a 4-5 sentence paragraph that explains: • Why do cells need energy? • How has the sun provided YOU with energy today? • What else do you want to know about this topic? Objective: Students will create a “Help Wanted” poster for a photosynthesis factory. • New Vocabulary: • Photosynthesis = chloroplast absorbs • light and uses it to make sugar energy • “photo” means “light” • “synthesis” means “put together” 2. Autotroph = an organism that makes its own sugar energy (food) 3. Heterotroph = an organism that eats other organisms to get sugar energy 4. Pigments = colored chemicals that absorb light (Example: freckles) 5. Chlorophyll = the green pigment in chloroplasts 10L 10R

  3. Notes: Stages of Photosynthesis (pgs 120-121) 08/29/11 08/29/11 OQC Brainpop—Photosynthesis Stage 1:Drawing: Stage 2: Equation: 11L 11R

  4. Notes: The 2 Stages of Photosynthesis 8/29/11 • Stage 1: Capturing the Sun’s Energy • Use page 120 to help you answer the questions and draw a picture The plant captures light energy. This happens in the cells of the leaf. The chloroplast has chlorophyll. The plant is making its own sugar energy using the energy of the sun. Chlorophyll absorbs the light energy and uses it to do photosynthesis. 11R

  5. Notes: The 2 Stages of Photosynthesis 8/29/11 The plant gets WATER from the soil. Water gets to the leaves from the roots. It also absorbs CARBON DIOXIDE from the air through holes in the leaves. The chloroplast uses the water and carbon dioxide to make sugar and oxygen. It does chemical reactions to make this change. The energy to do these chemical reactions came from the light energy captured in stage 1. The sugar gets used as food for the plant cells to live. The extra sugar is stored for later in the “body parts” of the plantfruit, roots, stems, etc. The leaf releases all the oxygen into Earth’s atmosphere. • Stage 2: Using Energy to Make Sugar (Food) • Use page 121 to help you answer the questions and draw a picture 11R

  6. Notes: Stages of Photosynthesis (pgs 120-121) 08/29/11 08/29/11 OQC Brainpop—Photosynthesis Stage 1:Drawing: Quick-write: Trees=oxygen factories!!! Please write a 4-5 sentence paragraph that answers:“How does cutting down trees affect the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air? How does this affect organisms? Stage 2: Equation: 11L 11R

  7. “Now Hiring!!!” Job Ad • Directions: • A new photosynthesis factory (a tree) just opened and needs more leaves! • Please write an ad for job that explains: • What kinds of leaves does the factory need? (size, shape, color) • What organelles and pigments do the leaves need to have? • What do the leaves need to be able to do? • What will the leaves be making? • How will the leaves be paid? • How many hours a day will the leaves be working? • What does photosynthesis LOOK like draw a picture!!!
