Office Intent • Umbrella for existing DOC youth retention strategies for targeting youth 14-24 • Operation Intern • Career Conversations • Youth Entrepreneurship • Serve as liaison to coordinate similar youth messages to youth, educators and parents
ND Youth Council Legislative Intent • Membership • 16 youth, 4 legislators, chaired by Lt. Gov. • First Meeting: October 13th • Final report due by September 2010
Top Priorities from 1st Meeting Education More in-state scholarships Internship opportunities Knowledge to students about quality of Universities in North Dakota Dual-credit or more course opportunities for schools & AP credits Recreation & Entertainment Change social culture of drinking Availability and accessibility to concerts, sporting events, entertainment venues, diverse restaurants Youth leadership opportunities After school activities – dances, theme parks Jobs Realistic job opportunities, connect degrees to jobs Get people to feel like they have just as much opportunity as other states Encourage businesses to hire ND educated graduates, more incentives Continuing education within jobs Health/Wellness & Safety Training on depression, suicide prevention, seasonal depression Parent Ed for alcohol influence – family counseling Tougher laws for substance abuse
Actions into RESULTS Improve awareness Identify needs and gaps Leverage expertise Establish a statewide “home” for youth information and services Develop a process for youth input Shape the mindset of youth that opportunities do exist in ND Greater retention rate of ND youth

DOC provides matching funds to eligible employers equal to 50% of wage or stipend paid to each intern , apprentice or work experience • Interns or work experience located in ND • New or expanding positions • College Students • High School students grades 11 & 12 for Trades and Technology positions
Classrooms, parents or educators speak live via webcam with an individual working in North Dakota from his or her office. • The conversations are recorded and stored on www.ndworkforce.com for future viewing. • DOC provides webcam and speakers. • Train the trainer sessions upon request
