TW– Criteria for writing summaries A summary is a compressed version of a much longer document or speech. You can summarize chapters, books, speeches, reports, and material from the Internet.
TW– Criteria for writing summaries Overall Organization • Introduction Begin with a topic sentence.[In “The Internet” (Petra Journal, August 2008: 23-26), Reem Al-Najar states that the Internet is comprise of hardware components.] • Discussion Briefly summarize the main points covered in the original material. [use your own words] • Conclusion Repeat the focus statement (author’s key ideas)
TW– Criteria for writing summaries Internal Organization How well you organize the body of your discussion [a problem/ solution format, cause/effect, comparison/contrast, or analysis.]
TW– Criteria for writing summaries Development To develop your summary, you’ll need to focus on the following: • Most important points (2-3 key ideas, omit irrelevant details) • Major conclusions reached (state how these points are significant. Show their value or impact) • Recommendations (by the author, as future course of action to solve a problem)
TW– Criteria for writing summaries Style The summary must be clear, concise, accurate, and accessible. • Avoid long words and sentences. • Be sure that your summary truly reflects the author’s content. • The summary must be unbiased.
TW– Criteria for writing summaries Length The summary will be approximately 5 to 15 percent the length of the original material. To achieve this omit the following: • References to the author • Past histories • Definitions • Complex technical concepts • Statistics • Tables and figures • Tangential information • Lengthy examples • Biographical information
TW– Criteria for writing summaries Audience Recognition You must consider your audience in deciding whether to omit or include information. Grammar and Mechanics
TW– Process to follow Prewriting • Locate your Article, Book, Chapter, or Report. • Write down your works cited or references information • Read the article to acquire a general understanding. 1 - Underline important points 2 - Make marginal notes
TW– Process to follow Writing • Review your prewriting. • Write a rough draft (follow the criteria for writing a summary)
TW– Process to follow Rewriting • Add detail for accuracy. • Delete unnecessary information. • Simplify words and complex technical terms (supersede (replace), remit (pay)). • Move information within the summary to parallel the author’s organization. • Correct errors .
