Prelude to the War (The French War) • The French War was fought in Indochina between 1946 and 1954 between the imperial forces of the French Republic and the Hồ Chí Minh-led Việt Minh (Vietnam Independence League). After seven years of bloody conflict, the French forces was defeated resulting in the Geneva Conference on July 21, 1954 made a provisional division of Vietnam at the 17th parallel, with the north being given to the Việt Minh as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam under Hồ Chí Minh, while the Republic of Vietnam took the south.

The Synopsis of the Vietnam War(1964-1975) • The Vietnam War was a military conflict in which communist forces of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the indigenous National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam, fought the anti-communist forces of the Republic of Vietnam and its allies, most notably the United States, in a successful effort to unify Vietnam into a single independent, communist state.

  4. Aftermath of the War • Both Vietnam’s were reunited to form the new Socialist Republic of Vietnam where the country was consumed to communism on July 2,1976.This government did no last long being overthrown by an even more pro-Vietnamese government, leading to the Third Indochina War.

American Role in the Vietnam War • The United States sent troops to stop the Southern Vietnamese government from falling apart. • Over 2000 troops were sent to help South Vietnam at the beginning of the Vietnam War. • By the end of the Vietnam War, there were over 58,000 U.S. dead soldiers (211,000 casualties). • The war cost the United States over $150 Billion. • Vietnam received $2.6 billion from the U.S. for financial support. • The United States plans didn’t work because South Vietnam became a communist country and fell to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam government. • This was the longest war the United States had ever been involved in.

  6. The Presidential views of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson President John F. Kennedy: • Wanted to use limited military action in the war. • Sent about 18,000 soldiers to help South Vietnam. • Later on sent more troops to help South Vietnam. President Lyndon B. Johnson: • Was sworn in as the President of the United States after President Kennedy was assassinated • Main focus in this war was military aid • believed that it was America’s job to stop all communist governments (Containment Act) • Put 550,000 American troops in Vietnam by 1968 • Goal was to get people to support all his policies when it came to the Vietnam war • Never really publicly advertised the war because he was afraid that the “hawks” would get pumped and want a win in Vietnam • Continued to send troops to Vietnam and the number of American casualties began to rise
