Models-3: a Result of Partnership • Models-3 represents the result of continuing research partnership between EPA and NOAA • CMAS is a logical extension of cooperation on Models-3 to the air quality modeling community as a whole
Air Quality Research Goal • Research to produce tools to create tools to be used in environmental decisions by Federal Agencies, States, the Private Sector and Public Interest Groups
EPA/NOAA Air Quality Research Accomplishments • 1980's -- Regional Scale AQ Models for acid rain, ozone and particulate matter • 1990's -- One Atmosphere Model -- CMAQ • 1990’s – Models-3 graphic interfaces, originally Object Store and Orbix- based • Inclusion of the Models-3 compatible SMOKE emission processor • 2002 – New Java-based modeling interface, developed for the Multi-media Integrated Modeling System (MIMS)
CMAS Partnership Functions • Extends collaborative Models-3/CMAQ development opportunities across the user community • Provides a central point for Models-3/CMAQ testing and release of model updates • Provides a collaborative, community supported focus for model maintenance
Future Research by the EPA/NOAA Partnership • Open to collaboration with the Models-3/ CMAQ Modeling Community • Includes: • Linking CMAQ with other models (e.g. RAMS) • Building the Next Generation air quality transport model –coupled meteorology and air quality model for use in “What if” analyses of environmental decisions • Air quality forecasting • Watershed analyses of nutrient and toxic chemical loadings from the atmosphere • Models of episodic emissions (dust, ammonia, etc.)
Other Partners • The scope and rate of progress of air quality modeling research will be expanded by the addition of more partners to the Models-3/CMAQ effort • CMAS has been established to provide the mechanism not only for model support, but for collaboration in research and implementation of model advances
