  1. Don’t Be afraid of Science Fair

  2. Take Home Message To help learners develop the abilities to do scientific inquiry, teachers need to give students responsibility for using the process skills of science. Teachers can make small shifts in existing activities to help learners strengthen the process skills needed for scientific inquiry. Lessons can be modified in specific ways to achieve particular purposes.

  3. Simple Flow Chart http://undsci.berkeley.edu/lessons/introducing_flow_hs.html

  4. The multi-step project may seem like the ultimate goal. • However the ultimate goal is what we • want our students to learn from the activity, • not the activity itself.

  5. 5 Es in sciencehttp://faculty.mwsu.edu/west/maryann.coe/coe/inquire/inquiry.htm • Engagement • Exploration • Explanation • Elaboration • Evaluation

  6. Shift Activities Shift from recipe (in textbook or kit – follow the procedure)… ….to inquiry-based (make shifts for particular purposes) …to independent learner Evidence of Chemical Change

  7. ….to inquiry-based (make shifts for particular purposes) • Example: shadow activity (shift from teacher giving question to student-generating testable questions) • Example: light source (practicing predictions)

  8. Benefits of Shifts Three central attitudes occur • a joy of learning, • a sense of efficacy or belief of one’s own powers and abilities to tackle a task at hand and • a sense of responsibility. • Learning is not memorization
