Welcome Mrs. G Miss. McNicol Hello and welcome to 2ndGrade! This is my fifth year as a 2nd Grade teacher and my second year at Alton Elementary. I love being a member of this learning community and am looking forward to a successful year! • Hello! My name is Mrs. G. and I am SO excited to be one of your 2nd grade teachers this year! This is my 6th year teaching, and my 3rd year here at Alton Elementary. I can not wait to have a phenomenal year together!

PBS in our Classroom and Home Expectations • Positive behavior expectations is a concept we strive for in Second Grade. Every child is ALWAYS given an opportunity to make a positive choice in a negative situation. • In the classroom, we use a behavior clip chart system. Students move their “clip” up for positive behavior or down for not meeting classroom expectations. • If students move their clips up to the next level and beyond behavior expectations, they can earn rewards such as Gold Cash or No Homework passes! • If students move their clips down, they have an opportunity to turn their day around and start having a positive behavior. Student can move their clips back up once the expectations have been met. • If a student’s behavior doesn’t improve and he/she clip continues to move down to the next level, the student will have a consequence of behavior reflection. This may be completed during recess or a pull out. If the behavior continues throughout the day, parents or guardians will be notified. • Students can move their clips up by… • Completing classwork using their best effort • Being a leader in the classroom and setting a positive example • Helping others and being kind • Following directions and expectations of the classroom • At home, this looks like students completing nightly homework and coming to school every day ready to learn!
Grade Level Standards • Math • Students will represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction, fluently add and subtract within 20, and work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. • Students will use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. • Students will reason with shapes and their attributes. • Students will measure and estimate lengths in standard units, work with time and money, and represent and interpret data. • ELA • Students read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text • Students determine the central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development. • Students analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. • Assess how point of view or purposes shapes the content and styles of a text
Diagnostic Assessments Pre-K – 2nd • Students are assessed in the beginning, middle and end of the year using a district selected assessment to determine how students are progressing in Second Grade. • These assessments are a tool for teachers to use in order to gauge which supports your child needs in order to be successful. • For ELA, the district has selected ReadyGen assessments to be used for assessments • For Math, the district creates Math assessments to be used for assessments.
Ready Gen • ReadyGen is the reading, writing, phonics, and grammar component for ELA instruction. • ReadyGenis designed to integrate the state standards using authentic texts. • Unit Design – students will not have an assessment every Friday. Students will complete an assessment after they have finished studying skills developed from a text. There are 6 units students will complete by the end of the year. • Assessments will assess skills – not stories • Reading, writing, grammar, spelling all integrated in each lesson and assessment • After each assessment, Miss. McNicol will send home a graded summary sheet of your child’s performance on the assessment. Please initial in the appropriate space and return to school.
Zearn • - ZearnMath is a top-rated math curriculum that personalizes learning for each student. • Students rotate between learning independently on computer and in small groups with the teacher every day. • To stay on track to complete all grade level content, every student should complete 4 digital lessons each week and 4 small group lessons with their teacher. These lessons are aligned so that students are exposed to the content in two different ways. • For some kids, the small group lesson may be a bit ahead of what they learned in their digital lessons, while for others, the small group lesson may be something they’ve already started to learn. Regardless of where students are in the digital lesson sequence, small group instruction gives them the chance to learn concretely and apply what they’ve learned so they can get to deep understanding.
Dibels • DIBELS is a reading assessment administered to all students in the beginning, middle, and end of the year. This assessment is administered one-on-one and verbally. • DIBELS measures students ability to read accurately, smoothly, and with expression, and comprehension. • This assessments requires students to blend words, read passages aloud, and then discuss their comprehension of the story. • Although students are not graded for their DIBELS results, they are encouraged to do their best reading as this is a tool for the teacher to support the students. • As they year progress, parents will be notified of their child’s results from each DIBELS assessment.
IRLA • IRLA is an individualized reading intervention program that is used daily in the classroom to support the needs of the students. • This program is designed to meet students where they are by providing individualized reading support. The reading support is intended to either bring students to reading at grade level or provide opportunities to read above grade level. • Teachers administer a quick reading assessment to each student to determine what level students are reading on and their areas needing support. • Teachers then implement daily lessons in small groups to support students in the learning gaps of their reading. • Students also learn what their reading level is, so they can select books from the classroom library to read independently. • This program allows students to develop into strong readers using authentic texts and reading strategies.
Computer Based Instructional Support • MobyMax • A reading and math intervention program. Students first take a placement test in each subject. Then, complete various activities based upon their learning needs gathered from the placement test. • Students can move up levels by completing activities. This program is monitored by the teacher. • Students can use this program at home • Zearn • An online math program that personalizes learning for each student. Lessons will align to the daily lessons taught in the classroom.
Grade Level Field Trips List October March Swamp Tour Second Graders will be embracing the outdoors in the spring by venturing on a swamp tour. Students will be learning all about their local habitat as they study the swamp and animals! More information to come! • Audubon Zoo • Second Graders will be exploring the local New Orleans Zoo! • Students will have the opportunity to learn about animal habitats from all around the world! • More information to come!
