  1. The Marijuana Debate Arguments for and against the legalization of Marijuana

  2. The Current Stance Official position of the White House • Associated with many negative effects • respiratory illness, poor motor skills, impaired cognitive and immune function. • Association with mental illness • Anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and schizophrenia. • Carcinogenic content higher than tobacco smoke. • Illegality helps keep prices higher. • legalizing drugs widens availability and misuse

  3. If a high tax was imposed, violent drug cartels would simply undercut legal prices to keep their market share. • Tax revenue would be offset by higher social costs • The costs to society of legal and taxed substances are much greater than the revenue they generate. • Legalizing marijuana would increase use of the drug and the harm it causes, adding to the burden on the criminal justice system. • DUI, crimes due to impaired judgment, etc. • legalizing marijuana would not deter criminal organizations from continuing to operate.

  4. The Opposing Stance • Increases pot tourism in legal states due to marijuana related events • Woodstock, etc. • Marijuana is a depressant, making it good for people with chronic anxiety • Reduces the price of marijuana. • Less usage of artificial weed substances (Spice, K2) • Increase of blue collar factory production jobs

  5. Reduces the price of marijuana. • Reduces prison costs due to less people being incarcerated for possession of marijuana. • Generate billions of dollars in revenue (state and federal) • Increase the GDP (no longer considered underground economy) • Increased consumer spending • Increased business investments to supply marijuana • Government spending on regulation decreases. • Exports will increase in countries that cannot grow marijuana.

  6. How will legalization with effect your life and those around you? • Which side do you agree with and why? • If marijuana is legal for adults, how will school and community prevention programs adapt their messages to prevent kids from using?
