How winds are produced • Currents are driven by winds • As air heats it rises and as air cools it falls down • These factors cause too types of wind: surface winds and upper winds aka jet stream
Wind Patterns • Dense air at the poles sinks and then moves to the equator to replace the less dense air that has moved away • The movement of the atmosphere is somewhat independent of the movement of the earths surface • Air moves eastward with the rotating earth
Continued • Air moving north or south away from the equator toward the poles moves progressively faster than the earth beneath it • Coriolis effect is that air rises at the equator and is deflected as it moves • The result is northeast and southeast trade winds
Ocean currents • Wind blowing across the surface of the ocean pushes and pulls the water causing it to move • Its reflection is a lot like the wind currents
