We must remember … • A leader must influence the individual or group. • Influence flows from both the leader and the group. • The leader represents the influence and needs of the group. • The leader’s task is moving the individual closer to the goal. Autocratic (Dictatorship) • Leader defines goals for the team, telling or selling them to team members. • Leader determines methods of goal achievement, expecting these will be the methods by which these goals are achieved. Democratic • Leader collaborates with team members in defining goals, acting as consultant or source of advice and counsel. • Leader expects goals to be achieved, but allows team members to determine their own methods to reach the goals. Delegation • Leader exerts little or no influence over the goals that the team members make, giving this responsibility to the team. • Leader expects that the team determined goals will be achieved and allows team members to determine the methods to achieve these goals. Opening exercise The three leadership styles can be found within the answers • Autocratic Style – Answer A • Democratic Style – Answers B and C • Delegation Style – Answer D Remember: Different styles work in different situations. Role Play using Interpersonal Skills • Lodge Chief and OA Unit Representative Chairman meet. • The OA Rep Chairman’s report for the Lodge Chief to present to the Council Executive Board was not turned in. • The OA Rep Chairman was just appointed and this is the first time he is responsible for the report. • The goal of this exercise is to include the OA Rep Chairman’s report in the next report to the Council Executive Board. Setting the Example • The example that an Arrowman sets, good or bad, will influence the younger scouts and the members of his team. • A bad example is a negative influence and will hurt efforts towards goal achievement. • A good example is a positive influence and will help efforts towards goal achievement.
