  2. Beginnings • Locard began studying medicine when he developed an interest in the application of science to legal matters. • A few years later he began studying law. • He also worked with the French Secret Service as a medical examiner

  3. Accomplishments • He formulated Locard’s Exchange Principle, which is the basic principle of forensic science and states “every contact leaves a trace”. • In 1910 he founded the first police criminal laboratory with the Police Department of Lyon. • He published over 40 works, including a seven-volume series, titled Traité de Criminalistique.

  4. Influences • Locard was a pioneer in forensics by starting the first lab and in 1929, he and numerous other criminalists founded the International Academy of Criminalistics in Switzerland. • Georges Simenon, a detective writer, attended several of Locards lectures. • Locard is also known for his contribution to the improvement of dactylography, the study of fingerprints.
