  16. Both the TEP and FY courses are designed to assist students move to undergraduate study, by creating a pathway which prepares them to be successful. We try to match the student to the correct course. The TEP is one semester course; FY is a two semester course. “I’ll do the short course” is often fundamentally flawed logic. The TEP is an intensive course, with 7 units completed over one semester. Stage 2 Maths is essential for TEP success. The FY’s first semester has 4 of the same units that are in TEP, but only those focused on academic reading, writing, and research. The units in the second semester of the FY course are undergraduate level units and it’s likely that many, in some cases all, will move as ‘advanced standing’ to a student’s undergraduate course with them. The FY is specifically designed for students who have ability which is not showing in their current grades or subjects. It is a pathway for students who have experienced some disadvantage – this can include issues such as: medical, family, pastoral, poor subject choices, personal disadvantage. A student’s personal statement needs to briefly describe the disadvantage a student feels they have experienced. The FY program requires applicants to complete an academic literacy assessment task; this is used predominantly as a screening tool.
