  1. How should governments in Canada respond to political and economic issues? How do environmental issues involve political and economic decision making?

  2. Introduction • The environment plays a pivotal role in our quality of life. Access to resources enables the production of goods, which, in turn, impacts the economy and our way of living. • The province of Alberta has access to and uses many natural resources, such as oil, natural gas, forestry, fishing, and agriculture. The impact of these resources in our daily lives is determined by economic and political decisions.

  3. Let’s read • Open your textbook and read pages 302-303. • Be prepared to discuss the two BTQ on page 303.

  4. Governments consider environmental, social, and economic issues when making a land use decision. • Environmental issues include topics like wildlife. • Social issues include topics like a safe water supply and healthcare. • Economic issues include the production of natural resources like timber, food, and energy.

  5. Land use should be planned so that it achieves the environmental, social, and economic goals of Albertans. • This can be challenging, because different people may have different goals. To identify a land use plan that balances multiple goals, cooperation and communication among different groups is very important.

  6. Assignment • Turn to page 304 to find out about government, economics, and environmental issues. • Read page 305 and 306 . Be prepared to discuss the BTQ on the right handside, page 305.

  7. Summary • The environment is influenced by human activity. This activity may include agriculture, oil and gas production, or urban development. The decisions concerning the environment are made by the government through policies and laws. • However, environmental organizations, consumers, and other stakeholders may also have input in the making of these government decisions.

  8. The economy also influences the decisions made about the environment. It is important for individuals, groups, and the government to work together for the benefit of all citizens, the environment, and the economy.
