PopulationServed • Students at-risk for leaving high school before graduation. • Lack of attachment to school • Special educational needs • Behavioral and emotional problems • History of academic failure • Poor attendance/increasing disinvolvement with school • *Low socioeconomic status • *Single-parent families • *Minority students (specifically Hispanic, African-American, and Native American populations) • *Living in a rural area • *Families who speak little or no English
Criteria • 25 Students • Students have 4 or more grades below “C” • Recommendations from team: Student Success Coordinator, Administration, Counselors, and various teachers. ***Many students also had attendance and behavioral concerns.
Program Goals(set by Grad Pathways Grant) • 80% of students will maintain a “C” or better in all enrolled courses. • 80% of students will be “on track” to graduate with peers. • 80% of students will report higher levels of school satisfaction and engagement. • 80% of students will report that the tutoring program was useful in supporting long term coursework success rates.
Additional Goals • Student’s feel respected, valued and important as a result of our relationship • Student’s self-esteem improves • Student’s set and achieve goals • Student’s identify strengths • Student’s have a safe place to discuss problems • Student’s feel more connected and vital to the school community
Elements of the Program • Tutoring Program • Highly qualified teachers provide direct tutoring services 3 hours/week • Support for homework completion and subject mastery ***Additional Funding for 2012-2013 • Individual Meetings • Monitor student progress (grades, missing assignments, etc.) • Personal/social counseling
Elements of the Program, Cont. • Student Success Class • Elective credit for students in SSP • Advantages/Purpose: • Frequent student contact • Accountability • WhyTry intervention (dropout prevention program, truancy and failure reduction) • Implement activities to compliment existing ICAP planning/career planning • Skill Building • Group work • Goal setting • Leadership skills
Elements of the Program, Cont. • Online Coursework • Made available in response to identified student need through Grad Pathways Funding • Since June 2012, each student has recovered an average of 1.3 credits • Credit Recovery Coursework • A+ currently offered at FMHS
DataTutoring • According to the Student Satisfaction and Engagement Survey, 100% of students who attended tutoring on a somewhat consistent basis either agreed or strongly that: • Tutoring gave me the opportunity to complete and turn in missing assignments • Attending tutoring made it easier to complete homework • The tutors were knowledgeable and helped me when I asked for help. • Tutoring also had an impact on coursework success: 41% of all grades were “F’s” in March 2012 and only 30% of grades were “F’s” in May 2012. From March to May, student’s overall grades improved an average of 1.39% and improved an average of 5.37% in core subject areas.
DataSatisfaction and Engagement • Results from the Satisfaction and Engagement Survey indicates: • 84% of students “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that they were more confident about their academic ability • 76% of students “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that they were more positive about school after being in the program. • 88% of students “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that being in the program had impacted them in a positive way • 100% “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that the Student Success Coordinator had provided services that were helpful to them • 76% of students “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that they had learned about their strengths and abilities as a result of being in the program.
Purpose Support higher graduation rates, decrease dropout rates, and support higher levels of academic achievement.
