According Lance’s research: • Scores go up when the librarian is able to collaborate and work with classroom teachers and students • A strong media clerk is able to tend to the duties of the library • The Pennsylvania study showed that achievement went up when staff size was larger in the media center (clerks)

The Research of James C. Baughman, Ph. D. on School Libraries and MCAS Scores • Baughman found that MCAS scores improved at every grade level where a School Library Media Program was available • Children from lower socioeconomic status with a SLMC perform higher than those students who don’t have a SLMC
Media Specialists Should be School Leaders • Lance found that academic achievement was higher in schools that had LMS who did the following: • Met regularly with administrators • Served on standards and curriculum committees • Attend school staff meeting and help library committee meetings
Who Will Promote Reading if there is no Media Specialist? • Krashen and McQuillan collected over a hundred years of evidence and found that those who are surrounded by large quantities of books will, indeed, read more • LMS purchase exciting books that students want to read • LMS make them accessible for students in the building • LMS push the collections in the home
