Office on the Economic Status of Women Fact Sheet WOMEN OWNED BUSINESSES IN MINNESOTA AND THE MIDWEST Women-Owned Firms by Industry In 2007, women-owned businesses in Minnesota were concentrated in the areas of Retail Trade (18.3%); Health Care & Social Services (15.3%), which includes child care, social work and rehabilitation services; and Other Services (15.0%). About half of all women-owned businesses in Minnesota are found in these three sectors Women-owned businesses are twice as likely as male-owned businesses to be found in the retail sector and more than three times more likely to be in the area of Health Care & Social Services. Among all Minnesota businesses, the largest concentrations by industry were in the areas of Construction (13.4%); Retail Trade (12.7%); and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (11.8%). Employees of Women-Owned Firms In 2007, women-owned firms with paid employees employed 153,088 workers, accounting for 6.2% of employees of all firms, and had annual payrolls totaling $3.9 billion.   The average woman-owned business in Minnesota, with paid employees, employed 10 people; however, 86.7% of woman-owned businesses did not have any paid employees (compared with 88.3% nationally). Women-Owned Businesses in Minnesota Minnesota trails the national average and other states in the region for the share of businesses owned by women, ranking XXth among all states and xtj(out of 6) regionally. In 2007, x% of Minnesota businesses were owned by women, compared to 28.7% nationwide and 28.6% regionally While the number of women-owned businesses in Minnesota has increased since 2002, the share of woman-owned businesses as a percent of all firms has declined slightly - from 104,170 businesses (x%) in 2002 too 112,373 businesses {x%) in 2007 – a in/decrease of x%. At the same time, nationwide, the share of woman-owned businesses increased by 0.5%. In 2007, woman-owned businesses in Minnesota generated over $x billion in sales and receipts. This represented x% of sales and receipts among all Minnesota firms in 2007 and a x% increase over 2002 revenues.
