  2. Project Background • Funded by: Shell Foundation • Implemented by: • China Association of Rural Energy Industry (CAREI) • Center for Entrepreneurship in International Health and Development (CEIHD) • University of California, Berkeley • Project duration: June, 2005-March, 2007

  3. Project Objectives • To promote the development and innovation of biomass stove enterprises in China • To reduce indoor air pollution and improve users’ health and life quality • To investigate opportunities to promote innovative Chinese household biomass technologies and products in other developing countries.

  4. Phase I • Activity 1.1 Set up project management organization • Establishment of Project Steering Committee and PMO • Recruit technical expert team for examination and evaluation Activity 1.2 Identify and select the evaluation criteria and evaluation of testing institution • Review report on the biomass stove testing standards in China and abroad • Investigation and evaluation report on the testing institution • Criteria selection Activity 1.3 Design the application form and procedure • Application forms and procedure

  5. Biomass Stove Test Criteria • Fuel consumer amount (kg/h) • Cooking power (KW) • Heat efficiency (%) • Smoke: Avg. Concentration (mg/m³)Emission factor (g/kg fuel)  • CO emission in flue: Average Concentration (mg/m³) Emission factor (g/kg fuel) High & low concentration(mg/m³) CO /CO2  • Indoor CO (mg/m³): Average ConcentrationHigh & low concentration

  6. Testing Center visiting and checking by experts from CAREI and CEIHDBeijing Enviro-Tech Dedusting Equipment Testing Center(BEDETC). Criteria finalizing by three sidesUniversity of California, Berkeley

  7. Phase II • Activity 2.1 Application and preliminary evaluation • Activity 2.2 Site visit to products and the manufactures • Activity 2.3 Evaluation of the applications • Activity 2.4 Approval of the winner list • Activity 2.5 Award ceremony meeting • Activity 2.6 Publicity and dissemination in China • Activity 2.7 Take part in discussion about CEIHD’s activities

  8. Applications Scanning • Questionnaires were sent out to 46 stove manufacturers • 19 manufacturers submitted their answered questionnaires and applications. • 10 applicants passed the qualification examination and pre-evaluation. 13. Stove Results: Briquettes • Fuel consumer amount (kg/h) 1.6 - 2.6 • Cooking power (KW) 2.2 - 3.4 • Heat efficiency (%) 32% - 43% • Smoke: Avg. Concentration (mg/m³) 21 - 36Emission factor (g/kg fuel)  .21 - .39 • CO emission in flue: Average Concentration (mg/m³) 218 - 1520 High & low concentration(mg/m³) 6 - 7820 Emission factor (g/kg fuel) .2 - .26CO /CO2  .011 - .039 • Indoor CO (mg/m³): Average Concentration 4.4 - 28.0High & low concentration 1.9 - 50.8

  20. Winning Stoves Review by Shell Foundation and CEIHD

  21. Next Steps Proposed for China • Capacity building with winning manufacturers • Pilot project in 300 households in 5 counties in western China • Business & technical training for supply chain • Business & technical training for manufacturers • Media dissemination • Government outreach • Testing capacity • System for industry standards • Develop end-user materials on optimal usage

  22. 4 UC Berkeley grad students Developmental economics Resource economics, MBA/MPH 1 Chinese grad student 15 stoves shipped to Phaltan (3 models) Worked with ARTI training team in Phaltan Tested with local fuels in test center and households Focus groups were skeptical at first. Concerns about price. In-home tests worked well for 2 of 3 models. One model is easily adjustable, continuous feed, good for large families. One model is good in small restaurants. More work needed on design, fuels & manufacturing costs. Market Investigation in Maharashtra

  23. Chinese stoves market investigation in India (Phase III)

  24. Lessons Learned, India • Impacts from fuel variation even greater than imagined • Potential customers very open to adaptation to unfamiliar products • Best model may be collaboration between Chinese & Indian manufacturers; Simple transfer of product less promising.

  25. Welcome to Beijing For Best Biomass Stoves Awards Ceremony Expected Date: March 27, 2007
