Think of an example of a time when someone has spread a false rumor about you • Did you get in trouble for the lie? • How did people look at you differently? • How did you try to fix the rumor?
When Utah became a territory… • Half of the government officials (people that decide laws organize how the area is run) were Utahans, and the other half were people from other areas of the country. • Some of the people were assigned to come to Utah to keep an eye on the new territory
Many people had false misunderstandings about Mormons and when they got to Utah, they realized that the Mormons were friendly, nice people! • But others came to Utah with a bad attitude about Mormons…
3 Federal Judges, an Indian agent and a surveyor created a false rumor about Mormons.
Problem #1 • The surveyor didn’t like how Governor Brigham Young organized the land. • He didn’t like that Young was assigning plots of land without having official government deeds to the land.
Problem #2 • Two judges left Utah with $23,000 that was supposed to go to building roads in the Great Basin • They never gave the money back! • These “runaway” officials spread rumors back East about poor management and Brigham Young
Judge William Drummond • Didn’t want to come to Utah in the first place • He offended the Mormons • He spread stories to the newspapers about polygamy and “corrupt” people in Utah • He THEN convinced the U.S. Congress that Brigham Young was creating an army of settlers and Indians to overthrow the country!
He also spread rumors that Brigham Young requested a band of Indians to kill John Gunnison’s government surveying team • Colonel Edward Steptoe spent 9 months investigating the rumors and found Brigham Young innocent.
BUT! • The complaints worried new President James Buchanan. • Even though he only heard one side of the story… • He got an army of soldiers, horses, wagons and weapons to stop the “rebellion” • He also got Alfred Cumming to replace Brigham Young as governor.
Brigham Young heard troops were coming and he thought they were coming to destroy their religious community • They formed a small army and marched to meet up with the US army. • They marched to Fort Bridger
They didn’t have enough weapons so they had to invent things to look like weapons: • Painted logs with wagon wheels to look like canons • Put shirts on bushes to look like more people • Hid explosives in a built dam so when the troops came, the dam would break and the water would flood them
Colonel Thomas Kane, a friend of the Mormons, told the President he would go talk to the Mormons before a battle • He learned the Mormons had no intention of rebelling and they would welcome a new governor! • New Governor Cumming were greeted the Brigham Young
Governor Cumming learned that the Mormons were peaceful people and reported back to the US army • After Johnston’s army learned of the news, they set upshelter for the winter and set up camp, Johnston’s Army settled west of Utah Lake to what is now called Camp Floyd near today’s Fairfield.
Results of Camp Floyd Pros • It became the 3rd largest city in Utah Territory • It brought much needed cash to Utah through the soldiers • Soldiers got jobs to help the function of the cities Cons • But, the city became full of prostitutes, gamblers and cattle rustlers. “The Wild West”
In the end… • The army went back East to fight in the Civil War • Governor Cumming left and Brigham Young was back as Governor. • The army diversified the area. (It brought different races, religions and beliefs to Utah) • Although the rumors were proven wrong, people of Utah would always seem to be a little “different”
