Reading Definition • Formal definition • A generalized class of which the word belongs too • With distinctions between it and other words in general class • Stipulative definition • Clarifies the way a writer uses the word, part of a whole • Extended definition • To define a complex idea, thing or quality to get a précis meaning • Synonyms • Words with similar meanings • Negation • What a word does NOT mean

Five Main Ideas about Definition Essays • 1.Definition creates boundary on a value, thing, emotion or concept by asking and answering “What is it?’ and “What isn’t it?” • 2.Formal definition: a statement generalizing the class that the word is a part of, followed by its own distinctions, much like a definition out of a dictionary. • 3.Stipulative definition: Depends on how it is used in the sentence. Specifies on the direct way the author is using the word in order to suit a larger purpose. • 4.Extended definition: explores in the full complexity a purpose or idea and then draws boundary around it until it gains a complete and precise meaning.
