Hazardous Waste in Garbage • 1% of average garbage bag is household hazardous waste
The Goal • Introduce a promotional tool to increase knowledge of HHW, and enable Halton residents to easily identify, safely store and transport their household hazardous waste.
The Pilot Program • 1000 Orange Boxes distributed at various events around Halton Region (single family & multi-res) • Resident survey completed • Meeting with curbside collectors • Monitor Orange Box returns at HHW Depot/SWDD
And So Far…. There have been NO Orange Boxes placed at the curb! Acceptable Material Sticker On the Orange Box Information Package
Next Steps • Evaluate program success in January 2014 • Single source distribution at Halton Waste Management Site • Charge nominal fee • Free to encourage resident diversion • Multi-Res Pilot
