What is Elluminate? • A virtual classroom which allows remote synchronous sessions • This means learners can log in from any computer with an internet connection • Providing flexibility and opportunity to learn from home • Recording of the sessions will enable asynchronous learning by making them available on Moodle.

  3. Key features include: • Video and sound transmission • Chat facility (via text, similar to MSN) • Shared whiteboard (editable by all) • Shared applications • Passing of control • Remote “desktopping” • Emoticons and hand raising • Polling • Quiz builder • Personal message sending • Breakout rooms.

  5. H.E. Practice • FdA Casino Operations Management • Aspers Casinos/Aspinall’s Club • Wide geographical spread • Managers with few formal qualifications • May have not been in education for several years • Mixed IT ability.

  6. Format • Week long study school once per semester • Weekly hour long session via Elluminate • Work-place visits.

  7. Positive Outcomes • Excellent student /employer feedback • 100% retention • Results achieved higher than traditional programme • Students can access elluminate globally • Further FE work with employer • Social cohesion of group brought business benefits • No technology related issues.

  8. Setbacks • Student attendance can be sporadic due to work commitments • Power –cut for one session • Issues with audio accessories.

  9. Future HE Usage • FdA Casino Operations Management to recruit similar numbers and roll out programme again next year • Business to trial delivery of CPD on FdA Management programme and within Teacher Education • Classroom to be used for meetings across the two campuses.

  10. Closing thoughts • Useful tool for some programmes • Solid, reliable use of technology • Do not have to be a technological genius to use the system • Overcomes geographical boundaries • Many future uses
