What Critical Thinking Is Critical thinking is commonly seen as having two components: • A set of information and belief generating and processing skills • The habit, based on intellectual commitment, of using those skills to guide behavior
What Critical Thinking Is Not • The mere acquisition and retention of information along, because it involves a particular way in which information is sought and treated • The mere possession of a set of skills, because it involves the continuous use of them • The mere use of those skills (“as an exercise”) without acceptance of their results
Definition of Critical Thinking • It is a mode of thinking • It can cover any subject, issue or problem • The thinker improves the quality of his/her reasoning by: • Taking charge of thinking processes • Imposing intellectual standards on those processes
So What Should We Do? • Raise vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely • Gather and assess relevant information • Use abstract ideas to interpret it effectively to come to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions • Test these conclusions/solutions against relevant criteria • Thinks openmindedly with alternative systems or lines of thought • Recognizing the assumptions, implications, and consequences • Communicate effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems
