Structure of talk • basic concepts • customization • follow and practice but • PLEASE set things back • Literature: windows 98 step by step
look at desktop • icons • taskbar • start button • folder icons • opening leads new window • buttons on window • minimize • maximize / restore • close
mouse operation • primary button • press: select • press and move: normal drag • secondary button • press: context menu • press and move: special drag
a window • is a rectangular, bordered element on the windows 98 screen • only one window is active at a time • a window can be resized • a window has a title line • a window has a menu • activate with ALT • select using arrow keys
more about a window • if the contents is too large to fit the size, scroll bars are displayed. • They allow the logical contents to be navigated from the physical window. • if all windows are closed, you see the desktop (this is how I define the desktop)
the toolbar • can be moved like other windows • desktop item shows the desktop • context sensitive menu has useful customization • auto hide • always on top • small/big items • show clock • off the bar: use ALT+TAB
right click on taskbar • allows to order windows • tile horizontal • tile vertical • cascade
web active desktop • customize my desktop • you can customize to achieve web style desktop • web folder option achieve that • other aspects can be changed in appearance • you can create a new active channel with the display properties box
desktop color and background • can be set with desktop right click properties • center pattern leaves a single instance in the middle • choose tile or stretch to fill background • you can put your own picture • you can set a screensaver • protects privacy • saves monitor power • makes you feel like a geek. • don't add a password here
creating shortcuts • a shortcut is a file that is a pointer to another file. • take an application from the menu and use the special drag to put it on the desktop • you can rename (secondary click) and delete a shortcut. deleting the shortcut does not remove the target of the shortcut.
my computer • is a top-level access to files and folders on the computer • in web style, moving over an icon will give you information about it • you can use the address bar to type name of files and folders, it has auto-completion
file sorting • in the standard tool bar with the folder views • sort • by date, by size, by name • icon style • large, small, list, details • open folders and move files in there to create order
file finding • in start find file or folders • name • contents • location • date • file type
delete • to delete file, righclick on the item, select delete • that moves it in the recycling bin • then click right on the recycling bin and remove it from there.
customizing the start button • you can special drag often-used items (programs or folders) to the start menu • you can rearrange items on the tool bar with the ghost and locator bar • similar exercise can be done on the favorites list in the folder view. • you can even move programs to the tool bar for quick access.
windows update • http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com • do this now to see how you can update the machine
shutting down • start shutdown shut
