The problem with the glasses: Working with protective overcoat and with your own glasses….. ….is unfortunatelynot enough!
The big mistake: 90% of people with glasses consider these to be as good as safety glasses! Correct: People with glasses need to wear safety glasses too!! Safety glasses with corrections are available upon request! Ask your group's safety advisor for information!

Emergency: Close the window!
Emergency: Alarm: Tel 888 Alarm-schedule: Who are you? Which emergency do you have? When and where did the emergency happen? How many people are affected? Behaviour: One person: 1. Alarms 2. Rescues (watch your own safety!) Several people: 1. One person alarms and co-ordinates; 2. the other people rescue and help!
Personal injury alarm: In case of acute accident(severe injuries or illness): • 1. priority: Always call Tel 888, and mention that an acute accidenthas happened. The alarm –office will immediately call for an ambulance and paramedical assistants for the HCI building. • In case of intoxication: call the toxicological information centre0-145 for further instructions! • After alarming, the 1. priority is to give first aid to the injured person. Organize someone to welcome the ambulance personnel and to guide these to the place of accident.
In case of non-acute accidents(light injuries): • 1. priority: Always alarm Tel 888. The alarm-office will call for the paramedical assistants, but will not call for an ambulance. After alarming, case a): • If no paramedical assistant arrives within 10 min., call Tel 888 again! case b): • The patient recovers and could be helped locally, but needs to go into hospital anyway: the patient feels well enough to use public transport (bus) or a taxi (accompanied by a colleague) to a hospital or to a doctor. The costs for a taxi will be reimbursed by the safety-, health- and environment commission (don‘t forget your receipt). case c): • The patient recovers and could successfully be treated locally; inform the alarm-office that everything is fine!

Only ever fix the cooling water connections by hand! This is strong enough! Nooo!!! Nooo!!!
Close the main valve if you do not need coolong water anymore (reduces flooding risk and saves energy) Never open/remove cooling water connections when the main valve is still in ist „1“ position…
If you don not need the cooling water anymore, remove the connections or provide a closed loop cooling water circuit! In case of leaking cooling water systems: inform lab-safety@chem.ethz.ch! In case of emergencies: Close the main cooling water valve for the laboratory in the supplies duct in the corridor! Inform all other users! Your group's safety advisor can give you more information!
Wrong usage of cooling water modules are the main reason for most of the laboratory floodings!
Always secure every cooling water hose connections with clamps!
Such tube connections are forbidden! and please….. Never use such red rubber hoses for cooling water connections!

Gas pressure regulator Gas main valve – on/off Counterclockwise = reduce pressure Clockwise = close gas supply Clockwise = increase pressure Counterclockwise = open gas supply The gas module: Never use tools to open/close valves!!!
Flow regulator (from the chemistry shop!) The problem with the gas module….. You can define a certain pressure for your equipment (e.g. gas-chromatograph) …. …but for defining a certain flow, e.g. for your glassequipment, you need a flow regulator!
Container for chlorinated solvent wastes Container for non-chlorinatedsolvent wastes The mobile waste disposal units
Tubes and cover lid connections should always be sealed In case of leaks: inform lab-safety@chem.ethz.ch ! Never overfill the containers!!! Please never open the container covers and tube connections!
Always dispose of your waste in the appropriate way…. - No alkali-wastes, please!!! - No reactive materials, please!!
No solid wastesin the box… Please collect solids (e.g. silica gel), acids, bases, toxic wastes, etc.) in special separate containers! Ask your group's safety advisor for more information!
Please clean the mobile waste disposal units regularly…. Please never let them get like this!
Please store your chemicals properly… Not like this, with strong acids next to sodium cyanide in a plastic bag…
Refrigerators: Please defrost them regularly!
The emergency balconies: Partyyy!! Please click on after one minute of thought……
Please keep escape routes free. In case of fire, small obstructions can becomedeadly traps because of the smoke.Never block the emergency exits.
Balcony- and lab-doors may not be kept open! It is forbidden to use the balconies through the emergency doors from the pratical work laboratories(except of course in an emergency). It is allowed to use the balconies from the research laboratories (excluding the practical work laboratories), as long as you close the emergency door behind you.
This is perfect! Yeahh!
Accept your own responsibility! Do not blame other people without a valid reason…
