  2. What is the EMAP Western Pilot? • A monitoring demonstration of indicators and designs for measuring environmental progress • Probability based survey design • Multiple indicators • Unbiased estimates of conditions of ecological resources

  3. Scope of the Western Pilot • 3 Resource Components • Surface Waters - Rivers and streams in 12 western States • Coastal Waters - Estuaries and near coastal zone in 5 states • Landscapes - Landuse patterns in 12 western States

  4. Purpose of EMAP Western Pilot • Demonstrate the value of survey based monitoring • apply to real problems of Regional/State interest • Advance the science of monitoring • indicators • designs • reference conditions • assessment methods

  5. Objectives of EMAP Western Pilot • Estimate the condition of ecological resources (estuaries, rivers and streams, landscapes) • Identify likely stressors to these systems • Build State capacity for long-term monitoring

  6. Objective of Coastal Component • To create an integrated comprehensive coastal monitoring program across the West Coast states to assess estuarine condition • West Coast States: California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii

  7. Schedule for Coastal EMAP • 1999 - Small Estuaries (CA, OR, WA) • 2000 - Large Estuaries (CA, OR, WA) • 2001 - Estuaries and Offshore (AK, HI) • 2002 - Offshore (CA, OR, WA) • 2003 - New Indicators and Reporting • 2004 - Reporting
