The E6B Wind Side Private Pilot Ground School
Wind problem • Given Info: • Wind 260 degrees true • Wind speed 50 kts • True course 240º • True Airspeed 98 kts • Find: • True heading • G/S
Wind problem • 1. Set grommet under 100 • 2. Set in wind direction under true heading mark 260 • 3. Mark wind speed up from grommet 50 • 4. Rotate compass ring to true course 240 • 5. Slide mark over TAS 98 kts • 6. Read wind correction under mark +10 • 7. Read ground speed under grommet 50 kts
Wind problem • True a/s 98 kts • True heading 240 + 10= 250 • G/S 50 kts
Wind Problem #2 • Given Info: • Wind true 030 • Wind speed 20 kts • True course 160º • True Airspeed 90 kts
Wind Problem #2 • 1. Set grommet under 100 • 2. Set in wind direction under true heading mark 030 • 3. Mark wind speed up from grommet 20 • 4. Rotate compass ring to true course 160 • 5. Slide mark over TAS 90 kts • 6. Read wind correction under mark -10 • 7. Read ground speed under grommet 102 kts
Wind Problem #2 • true a/s 90 kts • true heading 160 – 10 = 150 • G/S 102 kts
Real World Problem • Wind = 220 @ 20 knots • Course = 260 degrees • Distance = 300 NM • Fuel Flow = 7.8 GPH • TAS = 90 knots • # of gallons of fuel = 25 gallons • Solve for Ground Speed First on wind side • Then figure out the time for the flight • Then figure out how much time considering your fuel load • Compare these two times and consider a minimum of a 45 minute fuel reserve day or night for BBCC.
