Varying Syntax EQ: How can I revise my syntax (sentence structure) to create voice and interest in my writing?
Review of Jargon: I Am/Who Is We will start with the “I am a simple sentence/who is a person, place, thing, or idea?”
Identification Practice: Remote controls
Where are they located? At the beginning of your sentences? This is a typical speech pattern in English: S + V + all the rest! Let’s look back at your journals.Underline your subjects & verbs.
Typical: The athlete walked to the bench slowly after his defeat. • Adverb: Slowly, the athlete walked to the bench after his defeat. • Prepositional phrase: After his defeat the athlete walked slowly to the bench. • Participle: Defeated, the athlete walked slowly to the bench. OR • Recovering from his defeat, the athlete walked slowly to the bench • Infinitive: To recover from his defeat, the athlete walked slowly to the bench. Revision of Syntax Let’s change up the rhythms & start w/ something else besides the subject!

Writer’s Workshop Assignment: Revise the syntax of one sentence per paragraph in your last essay.
Steps: Pick a sentence/paragraph. As a group work on revising one sentence/person until all have one done. Then start another round of revision until finally all five paragraphs have one sentence revised (5 rounds total).
Let’s circle back again to your journal. Pick one of the sentences in the paragraph to revise the syntax. Choose a different way to start that sentence: adverb, prepositional phrase, participle, or infinitive. Label the method you chose.
