Questions-Comments • Don’t use my SQL for Virtual Center in Production • Virtual Center manages your server • P2V – NIC settings should be Auto/Auto with hot - look before you leap. Tips are on VMware site. • P2V – Large D: drive couldn’t create 410 gig on LUN – blocksize too small when creating datastore. • Caution: CD into ESX server – problem with reboot.
ESX 3 5 update 1 file name on Vmware CD truncates under windows, ok on linux. • CDs mounted on virtual machines – don’t leave mounted, creates problems for Vmotion. • Vmotion between NAS devices – problem with FQDN name and short name. • Update 2 bug- licensing issue – license expires. • Linux based VMs - time slips or gain time. Configure NTP server.
Do not mix NTP and Vmware Tools for time syncing. • Resource Pool Allocations (Chris McCain Mastering Vmware Infrastructure 3 Isbn 978-0470-18313-7) Great book if you can’t go to training this is a must have. • ESX and The Enterprise- Black cover with Jet engine on front- another book had diagrams, examples etc. • Can’t Hot Clone, cold clone limited storage drivers, bare metal backup worked.
P2V – problem with firewall settings, need to enable all necessary ports. • Snapshots – snaphunter.com to manage snapshots. • Problem with old PCI cards. ie. Fax card during P2V. – virtualize old cards, 3rd party software • Before you P2v have 3 Tools converter, plate spin, vision core , BrookTroutYou can always hit the Vmware site also. • After P2v windows still may blue screen or license keys may need to be updated.
