  2. Introduction • Scientist estimate that there are about 5 million different species of organisms on Earth. • We call this biodiversity: variety of living things • Bio- life • diversity- variety

  3. Fossils • When organisms die, they are often decomposed rapidly or consumed by scavengers, leaving no permanent evidences of their existence.

  4. Fossils • Some organisms become preserved. The preserved remains or traces of organisms from a past geological age embedded in rocks by natural processes are called fossils.

  5. Fossils • Fossils are physical remains of organisms. • They tell about life long before humans. • They suggest that organisms have changed over time.

  6. Fossil records • It is possible to find out how a particular group of organisms evolved by arranging its fossil records in a geological sequence.

  7. Question • How are fossils an important part of Darwin’s theory of evolution?
