Effective PowerPoint Slides • Use design templates • Standardize the positioning of your text, colors and styles • Limit information to essentials • CITE all of your resources
Text Guidelines • Generally no more than 6 words per line • Avoid long sentences/paragraphs • Large font = important information • Texts need to contrast background
Clip Art/Graphics • Should balance the slide • Show enhance the presentation • NOT overwhelm the audience
The Paper… • Most of your problems were here!
Mechanics • Spell check! • Get a 2nd or 3rd reader to proof • Avoid phrases such as: • “As I said before..” • “most major” • “things” and “stuff” • Review past and present tenses
Neatness • MLA and APA both have different styles for scientific research papers • Look them up! Follow them! • Cite within your paper • You HAVE to cite your material whether it is a direct quote or not!
