  1. 2 Kings 14:25 • 25 Jeroboam took back Israel’s land, which ran from the Lebo Hamath to the Arabah Sea. This happened as the Lordof Israel had told his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.

  4. 1. Jonah Running From God. • Jonah 1:1 – 2 (ERV) • 1The Lord spoke to Jonah son of Amittai:  • 2 “Nineveh is a big city. I have heard about the many evil things the people are doing there. So go there and tell them to stop doing such evil things.”

  6. 1. Jonah Running From God. • Jonah 1:3 • 3 But Jonah tried to run away from the Lord. He went to Joppa[c] and found a boat that was going to the faraway city of Tarshish. Jonah paid money for the trip and went on the boat. He wanted to travel with the people on this boat to Tarshish and run away from the Lord.

  7. 1. Jonah Running From God. • Hebrew 4:13 (ERV) • 13 Nothing in all the world can be hidden from God. He can clearly see all things. Everything is open before him. And to him we must explain the way we have lived.

  8. 2. RUNNING TOWARDS GOD. • Jonah 1:17 (ERV) • 17 When Jonah fell into the sea, the Lord chose a very big fish to swallow Jonah. He was in the stomach of the fish for three days and three nights.

  9. 2. RUNNING TOWARDS GOD. • Jonah 2:1 (ERV) • While Jonah was in the stomach of the fish, he prayed to the Lord his God…..

  11. 2. RUNNING TOWARDS GOD. • Jonah 2:2 (ERV) • I was in a very bad trouble. I call to the Lord for help, and he answered me. I was deep in the grave. I cried to you, and you heard my voice.

  12. 2. RUNNING TOWARDS GOD. • 1 John 5: 14-15 (NIV) • 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  • 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

  13. 2. RUNNING TOWARDS GOD. • Jonah 2:10 (ERV) • 10 And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

  14. 2. RUNNING TOWARDS GOD. • Jeremiah 33:3(NIV) • 3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

  15. 3. RUNNING WITH GOD. • Jonah 1: 2 (ERV) • 2 “Ninevehis a big city. I have heard about the many evil things the people are doing there. So go there and tell them to stop doing such evil things.”

  16. 3. RUNNING WITH GOD. • Jonah 3:1-2 (ERV) • Then the Lord spoke to Jonah again and said,  • 2 “Go to that big city Nineveh, and say what I tell you.”

  17. 3. RUNNING WITH GOD. • Jonah 3:3 (ERV) • So Jonah obeyed the Lord and went to Nineveh. It was a very large city. A person had to walk for three days to travel through it.

  18. 3. RUNNING WITH GOD. • Jonah 3:4 - 5 (ERV) • 4Jonah went to the center of the city and began speaking to the people. He said, “After 40 days, Nineveh will be destroyed!” • 5 The people of Nineveh believed God. They decided to stop eating for a time to think about their sins. They put on special clothes to show they were sorry. All the people in the city did this, from the most important to the least important.

  19. 3. RUNNING WITH GOD. • Jonah 3:5 (NIV) • 5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

  20. 3. RUNNING WITH GOD. • Jonah 3: 6  (NIV) • 6 When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 

  21. 3. RUNNING WITH GOD. • Jonah 3: 7  (NIV) • 7This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: • “By the decree of the king and his nobles: • Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 

  22. 3. RUNNING WITH GOD. • Jonah 3: 8  (NIV) • 8But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.

  23. 3. RUNNING WITH GOD. • Jonah 3:10 (ERV) • God saw what the people did. He saw that they stopped doing evil. So God changed his mind and did not do what he planned. He did not punish the people

  24. 3. RUNNING WITH GOD. • Joshua 1:9 • 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”……

  28. 4. TRYING TO RUN GOD. • Chapter 1: God Called - Jonah Disobey • Chapter 2: God Hunted - Jonah Repented • Chapter 3: God Called Again – Jonah Obeyed - Everyone Safe. • THE END

  29. 4. TRYING TO RUN GOD. God is not happy with mere compliance – He wants us to have His heart.

  30. 4. TRYING TO RUN GOD. • Jonah 4:1 (ERV) • 1 Jonah was not happy that God saved the city. Jonah became angry.

  31. 4. TRYING TO RUN GOD. • Jonah 4:3 (ERV) • 3 So now, Lord, just kill me. It is better for me to die than to live.”

  32. 4. TRYING TO RUN GOD. • Jonah 4:6-9 (ERV) • 6 TheLord made a gourd plant grow quickly over Jonah. This made a cool place for Jonah to sit and helped him to be more comfortable. He was very happy because of this plant. • 7 The next morning, God sent a worm to eat part of the plant. The worm began eating the plant, and the plant died.

  33. 4. TRYING TO RUN GOD. • Jonah 4:6-9 (ERV) • 8After the sun was high in the sky, God caused a hot east wind to blow. The sun became very hot on Jonah’s head, and he became very weak. He asked God to let him die. He said, “It is better for me to die than to live.” • 9 But God said to Jonah, “Do you think it is right for you to be angry just because this plant died?” Jonah answered, “Yes, it is right for me to be angry! I am angry enough to die!”

  34. 4. TRYING TO RUN GOD. • Jonah 4:10 - 11 • 10 And the Lord said, “You did nothing for that plant. You did not make it grow. It grew up in the night, and the next day it died. And now you are sad about it. 

  35. 4. TRYING TO RUN GOD. • Jonah 4:10 - 11 • 11If you can get upset over a plant, surely I can feel sorry for a big city like Nineveh. There are many people and animals in that city. There are more than 120,000 people there who did not know they were doing wrong.”

  36. JONAH WHAT ABOUT YOU? WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE IN JONAH’S PLACE?

  37. 4. TRYING TO RUN GOD. • DO YOU STILL HAVE A “NINEVEH? • GOD IS LOOKING IN YOUR HEART!
