Plate tectonic processes: earthquakes and volcanoes Performance Assessment for MP3, 2012-2013 – 8th grade Earth Science MI HSCES
Standards: E3.3; E3.4; E.1.1f,; E.1.2f,g,j, • Use the distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes to locate and determine the types of plate boundaries • Describe the effects of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions on humans. • Explain how the chemical composition of magmas relates to plate tectonics and affects the geometry, structure and explosivity of volcanoes. • Use of models • Presenting to public
Essential Question • How are Earth processes responsible for specific land features and accompanying natural hazards?
Performance Assessment • Goal: Show the relationship between plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes and the resulting land features and hazards. • Your Role: citizen, public employee • Your Audience: public government • Situation:Students must evaluate how locations on Earth are related to earthquakes and volcanoes and their possible hazards. This information needs to be relayed to public officials.
Product: Teacher approval required • Apply whatyou have learned to determine the relationship between the type of plate tectonics, and earthquakes and volcanoes. • Then construct a presentation of your choice (Powerpoint, poster, brochure, etc) with facts and data (from previous labs) to explain why your community needs to address its natural hazards safety protocols (guidelines). • Pick one of the cities listed below in North America along the Pacific Coast; Seattle, WA; Portland, OR; San Francisco, CAWest Yellowstone, WY; Memphis, TN; Anchorage, AK; Ottawa, Canada; Hawain Islands • Describe the geologic features of the earthquake or volcano. • Include the names of the plates and what they do, fault type, incidence of past or present earthquakes and volcanoes. • What to do for safety: buildings and people • Hint: the Pacific Coast will have the most information, the East Coast will be more challenging but need the information more acutely (they are not ready so they need it now).
Document Library • plate tectonic map • Plate Tectonic terms • Earthquake hazards • volcano hazards • 3-D volcano model • paper models
: Rubrics Content Rubric Essential Skill or Knowledge Novice Expert Comments Score Rubric: items to be included on presentation product • Name and action of plate and closest city from list 5 • Fault name in area or type of fault or reason for earthquakes 5 • Name of volcano or active/dormant volcanic processes in area. 5 • Safety precautions as recommended by the government and safety agencies. 10 • Map of area 5 • Expected damage from hazard, if it occurs 10 • Past evidence of activity 5 • Neat and creative product with all information included 5 • Uses paper model as part of presentation (less that 6”) 5
