  5. The Pure Land Sect(subset of the Mahayanist Sect) • The goal was to achieve salvation and live in a paradise called “the pure land of the west.” • Salvation comes through faith in Amitabha. • Uttering the name of Amitabha many times during the day is an aid to salvation. • Priests could marry, have children, eat meat, and live in the world like laypeople.

  6. The Pure Land Sect(subset of the Mahayanist Sect) • They have “Sunday Schools”. • Meet for worship in congregations. • Hear sermons from their clergymen. • Offer prayers to Amitabha.

  7. The Intuitive Sects • Truths of religion do not come through rational thought processes, study or scripture, or faith in a deity. • Truth comes from a flash of insight. • Intuition or inspiration which comes after a period of meditation is the key to Buddhist truth. • Salvation is an individual matter ant therefore one cannot receive much help from other persons.

  8. The Intuitive Sects • Temples are not important because individuals can become enlightened while sitting under a tree or sweeping a floor. • Zen Buddhism utilizes riddles that are carefully constructed to go beyond or confuse reason in order to lead the student into enlightenment. • Other forms were used to like suddenly shouting or slapping the pupil.

  9. The Rationalist Sect • In addition to meditation one should utilize reason and a study of the scriptures in order to find the truth of Buddhism. • An individual must study the scriptures of Buddhism in order to know this truth.

  10. The Sociopolitcal Sect • Current sects of Buddhism were a perversion of the true teachings of Buddha. • The Lotus Sutra was the only scripture a person needed to study to be a correct Buddhist. • Stresses an uncompromising patriotism and loyalty to Japan.
