  2. Program • Internet information retrieval tools. • Reproductive health resources on the World Wide Web. • Practical exercices.

  3. Information overload • Many millions of websites are available on the internet. • There are huge differences in quality, relevance and reliability. • Every day thousands of pages are added, updated, removed or have their address (‘URL’) changed.

  4. Information deficiency • Not all data that are published on paper or in electronic databases are also available on the internet. • Not all existing electronic resources can be accessed by everybody (intranets! deep web!) or for free (expensive commercial services!).

  5. Web indexes Text-based machine-generated indexes. Generally far more pages are found than needed. Fortunately relevance-ranking is often quite good (based on external links vs. paid rank enhancement). E.g.: • Google [+ Google Scholar = restricted to scientific literature] • All the Web • Search.com • …

  6. Web directories Subject-based human intellectual endeavour. E.g.: • General, comprehensive: Open Directory Project, Yahoo, … • Biomedical and health sciences: HealthWeb, MedlinePlus, Essential Health Links, …;http://lib.itg.be/biblinks.htm • Covering specific subjects, e.g. reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections, …
