Research funding by the DCCV • We support of research in many different ways: • Support of clinical trials or research projects by informing patients with study announcements • Take in active role in research projects, i.e. as an advisory board member • Initiating and conducting own research projects • Work with/in the relevant IBD research organisations • Announcement of research grants INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON IBD RESEARCH FUNDED BY PATIENTS ORGANISATIONS – ROADMAP

Research funding by the DCCV • Announcement of research grants: • Research is only financially supported by grants • First grant was awarded in 1992, by now 66 projects have been funded with 1.041.694,76 € • Grants do not only fund projects but may also motivate young researchers to start their career in IBD • Grants do usually not fully cover project costs but are seen as a kick-off INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON IBD RESEARCH FUNDED BY PATIENTS ORGANISATIONS – ROADMAP

Research funding by the DCCV • Research grants we announce: • Grant for patient oriented research(every other year, awarded in 2012, 50.000 €) • Grant for research in the field of complementary medicine(every other year, announced for 2013, 20.000 €) • Ludwig-Demling-Forschungspreis(every third year, awarded in 2013, 25.000 €, sponsored by Falk Foundation) INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON IBD RESEARCH FUNDED BY PATIENTS ORGANISATIONS – ROADMAP

Research funding by the DCCV • Decision making process: • Guidelines for applicants and reviewers • Evaluation committee is set up after knowing the applications, mostly consisting of members of our scientific advisory board • Final decision is made by the board of the DCCV • Selection criteria: Innovative?   7. 1. Example of funded projects Do cutaneous adverse events significantly affect monoclonal antibody based anti-TNF therapies in IBD patients? A national experience throughout all care levels by the German IBD Study Group (GISG) Grant for patient oriented research (awarded in 2012, 50.000 €) Timeframe: (presumably) 24 months starting end of 2012 Selection criteria: Innovative? Patient oriented? Scientific expertise of applicant and working group? Working program and time frame realizable? … Project leader: Prof. Dr. Daniel C.   8. 2. Example of funded projects Detect Dysplasia Comparison of two coloscopic methods in regard to detecting dysplasia an Ulcerative colitis. Grant for patient oriented research (awarded in 2010, 25.000 €) Timeframe: project started in 2007 and was supposed to end in 2011 Selection criteria: Innovative? Patient oriented? Scientific expertise of applicant and working group? Our Experiences • What we learned (so far): • Funding research needs expertise. • Objectiveness and independence are crucial. • Research (results) take(s) time. • Promising researchers will need time as well to become leading ones … • There are more “results” then the results of the funded project. • Keep your goals in mind.
