  2. What new instructional strategies did I implement in my classroom/practice during the course of the PDU? Start with a conversation about the math or science to see what background knowledge the kids bring. This way, I can help to build on that background knowledge during the future lessons. If they don’t have background knowledge, I start with videos to act as an anchor point. During science, I did a lot of total physical response (TPR) to get kids to remember and connect with vocabulary. For example, we did arms for latitude and longitude. Fishbowl to model activities or behavior.

  3. How did I apply the PDU strategies in my classroom? (examples) How did I collaborate with my team about implementing the PDU strategies? We met every few weeks to talk about the reading, see how we implemented it in our classrooms, and share ideas or past experiences. Hearing how literacy teachers implement these strategies helps me to be a more effective math/science/s.s. teacher for my ELA students.

  4. What three strategies did I implement from the study section of the PDU? What strategy worked best? Why? Start with a conversation about the math or science to see what background knowledge the kids bring. This way, I can help to build on that background knowledge during the future lessons. If they don’t have background knowledge, I start with videos to act as an anchor point. During science, I did a lot of total physical response (TPR) to get kids to remember and connect with vocabulary. For example, we did arms for latitude and longitude. Fishbowl to model activities or behavior. Background knowledge worked really well, it engaged students and got them excited about what they are learning. They would also tell me that they would go home and share what they learned with their families after we had talked about how it relates to home.

  5. What did I learn to do differently as a result of the PDU and strategy implementation in my classroom? • WORD WALLS My word wall has frequently used vocabulary for math. I have them placed next to other words that they are related to. Thousands, hundreds, tens, ones, tenths, hundredths In chapter 9, there is a word wall demonstrating the use of la B grande and la v chica. Students looking at lists of words using the letters side by side helps the students decompose the complexity of the concepts. I have started to include spanish cognates on my vocabulary wall, or even just ask the students how to say that word in spanish, since I only have a few students who need the support.

  6. Why is this PDU action research process important to my students learning and to my growth as a professional? It is important that ELA students get the support they need to learn English, not just up until they transfer out of ELA services. It’s important that ELA-E teachers know the supports to help students learn vocabulary and comprehend the material. It is also important for math/science teachers to know how to support reading/writing as well!!! Students who grow up speaking spanish and english should maintain fluency in both!!

  7. PDU Data AnalysisReflecting on the data you have collected, how did this experience impact instruction, progress monitoring, student performance, and your own practice? Adding background knowledge and supports around vocabulary has helped mostly with behavior and engagement of my ELA students. I have noticed that I have not had to move as many clips, that their exit tickets are getting better with more of a focus on vocabulary and comprehension.

  8. How will I apply my new learning in the future to further my practice? What are my next steps? I would like to implement the following strategies next year: • Say something – adapted to math (four reactions) • Learning journals – during breakfast?? • Sentence prompts

  9. PDU Artifact #1

  10. PDU Artifact #2

  11. PDU Artifact #3

  12. Exit Ticket • How can we support your professional growth in future PDUs? Keep giving us time to read outside of class • 2 things that you took away from the PDU this year How to support my ELA students with background knowledge and vocabulary • 1 piece of constructive criticism I don’t feel like I was able to apply much of it to my subjects, especially since I don’t teach or KNOW Spanish
