3 Forms of Sign Language • ASL • PSE • SEE
ASL: American Sign Language • Visual language • Speech-reading and listening skills are not needed to learn this fluently • Very graphic; causing it to be more understanding of concepts • Free-flowing, natural language • TIME+TOPIC+COMMENT structure
PSE: Pidgin Signed English • Vocabulary is drawn from ASL but is written in English word order • Words that do not carry info get thrown out • Endings such as –ed –ing get thrown out too • Simpler than ASL or SEE
SEE: Signing Exact English • Child has an opportunity to expand vocabulary • More comfortable for English-speaking parents • requires more signing time the PSE
Other Signed Languages: • Francophone African Sign Language: French influenced ASL • Moroccan Sign Language: less than a 50% similarity with ASL • Sudanese Sign Language: government proposal to unify local languages
