  21. Basic Risk Assessment Available PPE (Gloves – puncture resistant) Never attempt to handle sharps directly. Confirm to EN388 Puncture resistance min level 2 Must be CE marked

  22. Basic Risk Assessment Available PPE (Gloves – nitrile) Prevent accidental direct contact Never attempt to handle sharps directly May prevent / reduce blood entering blood stream.

Disposal Procedure • Assess the area and agree a safe approach • Cover any open wounds with a waterproof dressing • Put on Personal Protective Equipment • Place sharps container on the ground near the item • NEVER try to recap the syringe or break it off • Using equipment pick up the syringe by the barrel end • Carefully place the syringe into the sharps container (Take your time – it’s not a race – you are handling a potentially dangerous item) • Collect all needles Do not fill passed ¾ or fill line • Close the container – lock shut if full.

Disposal Procedure • Wipe down equipment with the sanitising wipes and place in general waste • Remove disposable gloves (inside out) and place in general waste • If possible wash hands or use sanitising gel • Store the container safely • Dispose of through: • KBC: Refuse ad Recycling • CBC: Environmental Services.

Disposal Procedure Sharps Injury • Encourage the wound to bleed • Wash the wound using running water and plenty of soap • Dry the wound and cover it with a waterproof plaster or dressing • Seek urgent medical advice • Report your injury to your employer (Accident form) • DON’T SUCK THE WOUND • DON’T SCRUB THE WOUND WHILST YOU ARE WASHING IT.
